Nottingham Transportation Engineering Centre (NTEC)
The research at NTEC in pavement engineering has expanded since its inception in 1954 to embrace all pavement materials, design, evaluation and management.
From beginnings in road asphalt, research now extends to:
- Dock, airport and rail pavements
- Wider transportation infrastructure
- Asset management and maintenance
- Risk analysis and reduction in transportation systems
- Congestion avoidance
The key aims of NTEC are to continue to undertake internationally leading research in the areas of pavement engineering and materials, infrastructure asset management and operational risk and reliability; to provide high-quality academic supervision of PhD and MSc research students, and to offer specialised testing and consultancy services to industry. These aims are achieved through the recognised expertise of the academic members of NTEC and the excellent laboratory and research facilities present within NTEC.
The Pavement Research Building is a purpose-built £2.4m state-of-the-art centre for research and development in all areas of pavement engineering; design, performance, maintenance and materials. It incorporates world-class laboratories for testing asphalt, concrete, bitumen, aggregates, recycled and other paving materials as well as pilot-scale pavements.
The Pavement Research Building provides both laboratory facilities for the research activities of the Nottingham Transportation Engineering Centre of the University of Nottingham as well as a confidential commercial testing service to the pavement engineering industry.
NTEC has the following capabilities:
- Pilot-scale pavement test facility
- Extensive asphalt testing facilities
- Analytical and rheological bitumen laboratories
- Pavement geotechnical assessments
- Testing of cement treated materials
- Environmental leaching assessments
They have a wide range of testing equipment within these facilities. Our laboratories are employed for assessing:
- Road, airfield and dock pavements
- Rail track construction and maintenance
- Recycling and environmental aspects of pavements
- Bridge decks and road ironwork
NTEC is promoting strong industrial involvement in all degree programmes and close relationships with many companies, creating benefit for both students and businesses.
