Institut Français des Sciences et Technologies des Transports, de l’Aménagement et des Réseaux (IFSTTAR)

IFSTTAR is a French public scientific and technological institution. It is placed under the joint authority of the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy and of Ministry of Higher Education and Research. Recognised as a new reference organisation in the international arena, Ifsttar conducts applied research and expert appraisals in the fields of civil engineering and building materials, urban engineering, natural hazards, the mobility of people and goods, components & systems transport safety. The Institute has an overall budget of €120M and a staff of about 1250 employees including researchers, laboratory and field staff, administrative personnel and doctoral students.

Key Facilities

The IFSTTAR accelerated pavement testing (APT) facility, managed by LAMES. This APT facility is one of the largest in the world, with three circular test tracks, each 120 m long and 6 m wide. IFSTTAR also has testing facilities including a dynamic testing bench to characterise the response of geophones.Besides, IFSTTAR is an active member of FEHRL (Forum of European Highway Research Laboratories) and enjoys many close ties with road contractors and road owners, namely through the coordination of a large nationwide scientific and technical network of Engineering Centres spread out all over France, enabling to keep close contact with the field. Furthermore, IFSTTAR probably has the most recognized expertise in Europe for the sustainable development applied to road infrastructures and LCA.

Projects

IFSTTAR and former LCPC were involved in different previous  Marie Curie ITN (ex: Training in European Asset Health Monitoring TEAM ). The IFSTTAR team is currently involved in the European project FP7 Re-Road “End of life strategies of asphalt pavements” and in the FP7 Marie Curie ITN Training in European Asset health Monitoring TEAM.
