Smart and Sustainable solutions for road and airport pavement

WHO AM I?

Mario has a Civil Engineering degree from the Army Polytechnic School (Ecuador) and a Master degree of Engineering from the Technical University of Madrid (Spain). Mario has been working as Pavement Engineer for more than 5-years in South America and Europe. While working for the Consultancy Department in Dynatest Denmark A/S from 2015 to 2017, Mario did multiple Structural and Functional Evaluations in airports like Hamad International Airport, Dubai International Airport and Abu Dhabi International Airport to name a few. In parallel, Mario has given seminars and training courses in Spain (2016), South Korea (2016), and Argentina (2017) and presented the research carried out in Denmark in the application of the Fast-Falling Weight Deflectometer as Accelerated Pavement Testing at the 10th International Conference on BCRRA in Greece (2017)

Currently, Mario has joined the Nottingham Transportation Engineering Centre (NTEC) at University of Nottingham to write his Doctoral studies within SMARTI ETN in the Marie-Sklodowska Curie Actions funded by the EU Commission.

MY PROJECT

“SmartEcoPave” Smart and Sustainable solutions for road and airport pavement

This project conceives the re-thinking of the “old” asphalt pavements, through the incorporation of sustainability concepts and smart technologies.

This will be achieved by:

  • Developing asphalt mixtures incorporating a high amount of secondary materials such as reclaimed asphalt and recycled tyre rubber, and lower energy consumption during manufacturing
  • Furthermore, the pavement will be equipped with low-cost/High-tech solutions able to harvest energy and/or for cost-effective and pro-active communication with the infrastructure managers
  • Allowing optimisation of maintenance operations towards a prolonged infrastructure’s life such as embedding fibre optic systems.
